TEA WITH BERYL DRUSILLA de ZOETE
(1879 - 1962)

As told by Dorothy, niece of Julia Mary Simon.

My aunt Julia Mary Simon knew Beryl well, though she was not well thought of by the more starchy members of the family,
thought to be fast and immoral, and - worse still - "eccentric".
Curiously, when I was in my teens and early twenties, my best friend who was ballet critic for the Daily Herald had this friend "Beryl"
who sounded great fun and a fount of knowledge about our favoured interest - ballet - I even met her once. We had a pre-theatre snack
in Joe Lyons nearest the Opera House. Never for a moment did I realise this was the infamous Beryl de Zoete.
I checked up many years later, and yes, it was she. We could have been friends for life.
