THE YARMOUTH EXCURSION It was in the early 1950s, in the days of steam, my father was Station Master at Ingatestone in Essex. One morning, a train stopped unexpectedly and he went out onto the platform to see why it had stopped. The driver getting down from the footplate said that he could hear a disturbing rattling noise and was going to investigate. They found a piece of a metal casing loose and after much deliberation as to how to secure it my father went to the Station House garden and returned with the washing line. They soon had it secured and off went the Liverpool Street to Yarmouth day excursion, with almost 100 miles to go. Later that evening, the express again stopped at Ingatestone, the driver returning the washing line and making a presentation of a box of kippers which passengers had subscribed to in their appreciation of his help and of saving the day. The train pulled out of the station with grateful passengers at the windows waving their thanks. The engine had been repaired whilst it waited at Yarmouth for the return journey. |
