Notes: 1881 census. a widow, age 54, Gravel Road, Walsoken. Her son Arthur and daughter Harriet were with her. They lived next door to her son Robert and Family.

ARTHUR BAXTER born June qtr1857, Walsoken. Wisbech dist 3b 618.
1871 census with parents at Turnpike Marsh, Walsoken. Occupation Ag. Lab.
1881 census, with mother at Gravel Road, Walsoken Occupation Horse Slaughterers Assistant.
On 12 December 1880 he was prosecuted at the Isle of Ely Court for poaching.
He was fined two pounds with sixteen shillings costs and asked for time to pay but was refused
and was ordered to pay ten shillings down and given a week to pay the rest.
Family legend has it that Arthur went to London to start a slaughtering business,
one night on his way home, splattered with blood, he was arrested and allegedly given a hard time
as a suspect in the hunt for Jack the Ripper.
When released he returned to Walsoken.
This may be the Arthur Baxter lodging at 69 Victoria Dock Road, West Ham, per the 1891 census.
